Video compression
Video compression refers to reducing the quantity of data used to represent video images, and this is almost always coupled with the goal of retaining as much of the original's quality as possible. Compressed video can effectively reduce the bandwidth required to transmit digital video via terrestrial broadcast, via cable, or via satellite services.

La compression vidéo est une méthode de compression de données, qui consiste à réduire la quantité de données, en limitant au maximum l'impact sur la qualité visuelle de la vidéo. L'intérêt de la compression vidéo est de réduire les coûts de stockage et de transmission des fichiers vidéo.
Videokompression
Mit Hilfe der Videokompression lässt sich die Datenrate eines digitalisierten Videosignals beziehungsweise, nach Speicherung, der Platzbedarfes einer Videodatei um ein Vielfaches verkleinern. Unter anderem standardisiert die Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) Verfahren zur Videokodierung und Audiokodierung.

Un segnale tv trasformato in formato digitale rappresenta una grande mole di dati da elaborare che va oltre alle capacità degli attuali sistemi di diffusione tra cui i transponder satellitari. Questa enorme quantità di dati per essere sfruttata nelle trasmissioni tv satellitari richiede un trattamento di "compressione" che si concretizza nella applicazione dello standard MPEG-2. Anche se il segnale non deve venire trasmesso, comunque, sono spesso necessarie tecniche di compressione per poterlo registrare o elaborare.
Compressão de vídeo
Um vídeo (como arquivos do tipo AVI ou MPEG) é formado por várias imagens sendo projetadas. Cada imagem é chamada quadro e a quantidade de imagens projetadas por segundo é chamada quadros por segundo ou FPS (frames per second). Quanto mais quadros por segundo seu vídeo tiver, melhor, pois mais realista será a imagem. Vídeos normalmente trabalham com a mesma qualidade da TV, que é de 30 quadros por segundo.

קידוד וידאו הוא פתרון טכנולוגי שנועד להקטין את נפחם של קובצי וידאו תוך פגיעה מינימלית באיכותם, על מנת שידרשו פחות נפח אחסון או שיהיה ניתן לשדר אותם באמצעות רוחב פס נמוך יותר. קיימים אלגוריתמים שונים לקידוד וידאו, רובם מאבדי נתונים (כדוגמת MPEG, Theora ו-DivX) וחלקם משמרי נתונים (כדוגמת HuffYUV) הקידוד מתבצע באמצעות התקן או תוכנה המכונים מקודד (encoder), על מנת לצפות בקובץ וידאו מקודד יש להשתמש ברכיב מפענח (decoder).

Compression of sequences of images. Video compression algorithms use the fact that there are usually only small changes from one "frame" to the next so they only need to encode the starting frame and a sequence of differences between frames. This is known as "inter-frame coding" or "3D coding". MPEG is a committee producing standards in this area and also the name of their standard algorithm. H.261 is another standard. Compression (video)
Process which reduces the number of bytes required to store/transmit digital video . Typical schemes involve comparing frames and coding-out, or eliminating, inter-frame and intra-frame redundancies. The compression may be done by software, hardware or a combination of the two. On playback, the data is decompressed. See CODEC . Why compress video data? To reduce storage space and to playback faster. A full-screen (640 x 480 pixels ) image with 16.4 million colors takes up 1 Mb of memory. For full-motion, the computer needs to display 30 pictures/frames per second, thus requiring it to "shuffle" 30 Mb of data every second. Storing 10 seconds of video would require 300 Mb.
