Three letter acronym
A three letter acronym (commonly referred to as a TLA) is an abbreviation, an alphabetism, an initialism or an acronym consisting of three letters. Many of the abbreviations described as "three letter acronyms" are initialisms, which some definitions of acronym do not include (See acronym and initialism). Nevertheless, "Three letter acronym" is commonly used for any set of three letters used as an abbreviation.
Acronym and initialism Acronyms and initialisms are abbreviations, such as NATO, laser, and IBM, that are formed using the initial letters of words or word parts in a phrase or name. Acronyms and initialisms are usually pronounced in a way that is distinct from that of the full forms for which they stand: as the names of the individual letters (as in IBM), as a word (as in NATO), or as a combination (as in IUPAC). Another term, alphabetism, is sometimes used to describe abbreviations pronounced as the names of letters.
Acronymie
L'acronymie (du grec , ákros, « au bout, extrême » et , ónoma, « nom ») est l’abréviation d’un groupe de mots formée par la ou les premières lettres de ces mots dont le résultat, nommé acronyme, se prononce comme un mot normal — on parle aussi de lexicalisation. Il diffère en ce point de l’abréviation dont les lettres sont épelées (SNCF) et de l’abréviation prononcée en long (etc.).
Dreibuchstabenabkürzung
Die Dreibuchstabenabkürzung, im Englischen TLA (three-letter acronym oder three-letter abbreviation) ist die häufigste und beliebteste Form von Abkürzungen im technischen Umfeld, und vor allem im Englischen auch im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch häufig anzutreffen. Die Bezeichnung three-letter acronym ist zwar die häufiger verwendete und etabliertere Auslegung, doch ist die Bezeichnung Akronym in diesem Zusammenhang umstritten und die Interpretation als abbreviation (Abkürzung) wohl zutreffender, sind doch die meisten Dreibuchstabenkombinationen nicht ohne weiteres aussprechbar. Im Englischen wird das TLA auch als Abkürzung für two-letter abbreviation (oder acronym) genutzt, durch die Etablierung in der Umgangssprache kann aber in der Regel von der Bedeutung als Dreibuchstaben-Variante ausgegangen werden.

Skrótowiec, in. akronim (z gr. ákros = skrajny) – słowo utworzone przez skrócenie wyrażenia składającego się z dwóch lub więcej słów. Istnieje także niewielka grupa skrótowców powstałych ze skrócenia jednego słowa. W ujęciu słowotwórczym, skrótowce to specyficzna klasa derywatów. Derywaty te funkcjonują w polszczyźnie pisanej i mówionej. Skrótowiec często bywa mylony ze skrótem.

Three-letter acronym TLA nel gergo hacker è un acronimo che significa Three-Letter Acronym (acronimo di tre lettere). È utilizzato per indicare tutte quelle sigle e quegli acronimi formati da tre sole lettere. Sono ad esempio dei TLA gli acronimi FTP, IRC, JPG, DVD, CPU, MMU ecc. Da notare è il fatto che TLA è un TLA esso stesso.

Akronym
Akronym (grekiska ακρος, akros, ytterst, och ονυμα, onyma, namn) eller initialförkortning är en förkortning bildad av begynnelsebokstäverna i flera ord eller ordled. Vissa anser att termen "akronym" endast skall användas för initialförkortningar vilka utläses som ord istället för att bokstaveras. Exempelvis är initialförkortningen Ikea definitivt en akronym, medan CD inte är en akronym enligt den snävare definitionen.
TLA En TLA är en akronym som består av tre bokstäver. Ordet TLA är själv en TLA och kommer av engelska ”three-letter acronym”, vilket ungefär betyder ”akronym med tre bokstäver”. TLA:er är mycket vanliga i datorsammanhang. Filsuffix i MS-DOS är nästan alltid av TLA-typ, exempelvis EXE, HTM, MP3. En speciell variant av TLA är en så kallad ETLA eller XTLA (extended, utökad) TLA, där fyra bokstäver brukas i stället. Exempel på det är bios och HTML.

TLA TLA er en forkortelse for det engelske Three Letter Acronym, trebogstavsforkortelse. Forkortelser med netop tre bogstaver er almindelige i computerverdenen og kan dække over firmaer som International Business Machines IBM og Advanced Micro Devices AMD, styresystemer som Disk Operating System DOS, filtyper som Joint Photographic Group JPG, Hyper Text Markup HTM og mange andre. En del internetjargon er netop TLA'er for forskellige udtryk.

People who like this looser usage argue that not all TLAs have three letters, just as not all four-letter words have four letters. One also hears of "ETLA" (Extended Three-Letter Acronym) being used to describe four-letter acronyms. The term "SFLA" (Stupid Four-Letter Acronym) has also been reported. See also YABA. The self-effacing phrase "TDM TLA" (Too Damn Many...) is often used to bemoan the plethora of TLAs in use. In 1989, a random of the journalistic persuasion asked hacker Paul Boutin "What do you think will be the biggest problem in computing in the 90s?"
