Killer application
A killer application (commonly shortened to killer app), in the jargon of computer programmers and video gamers, has come to mean any program, particularly a minor one, that is ingeniously coded or unexpectedly useful. Originally, and more broadly, "killer app" has been used to refer to any computer program that is so necessary or desirable that it provides the core value of some larger technology, such as a gaming console, software, operating system, or piece of computer hardware. In this sense, a killer app substantially increases sales of the hardware that supports it.

Killer application désigne un programme informatique si attractif qu'il justifie à lui seul, pour de nombreux consommateurs, l'achat ou l'adoption d'un type particulier d'ordinateur, de console de jeu, ou de système d'exploitation.
Killerapplikation
Eine Killerapplikation (auch englisch: killer application) ist eine konkrete Anwendung, die einer schon existierenden Technologie zum Durchbruch verhilft. Zuvor stieß diese Technologie auf wenig Interesse, denn man sah keine Verwendung für sie. Die Namensgebung leitet sich daher ab, dass ähnliche und oft ältere Konkurrenz-Technologien schnell verdrängt werden, also getötet (englisch: to kill).

Killer App (z ang. Killer application) jest określeniem każdego programu komputerowego, który jest tak potrzebny i pożądany, że stanowi główną wartość szerszego zakresu technologii.

Killer application La locuzione inglese killer application, spesso utilizzata nel gergo dell'informatica, dell'elettronica, dei videogiochi e in altri settori, significa letteralmente applicazione assassina, ma viene intesa nel senso metaforico di applicazione decisiva, vincente. Essa si riferisce a un prodotto di successo costruito su una determinata tecnologia (quindi una applicazione di quella tecnologia), grazie al quale la tecnologia stessa penetra nel mercato, imponendosi rispetto alle tecnologie concorrenti e aprendo la strada alla commercializzazione di altre applicazioni secondarie. Uno dei contesti in cui questa espressione viene usata più frequentemente è quello delle console per videogiochi; in questo caso la killer application è un gioco di grande successo, disponibile in esclusiva su una certa console, e che quindi contribuisce al successo della console stessa rispetto alle concorrenti.

Een killerapplicatie of killertoepassing (Engels: killer application , afgekort killer app) is een computerprogramma dat zo aantrekkelijk en bijzonder is dat mensen bepaalde computer hardware, spelconsole en/of besturingssysteem speciaal kopen om dat programma te kunnen gebruiken. Over het algemeen noemt men als eerste voorbeeld van een killerapplicatie het programma VisiCalc, een spreadsheet op het Apple II platform. De machine werd gekocht door duizenden mensen in de financiële sector. Het volgend voorbeeld is een andere spreadsheet, Lotus 1-2-3. De verkoop van IBM's IBM PC was maar matig geweest voor het uitbrengen van 1-2-3, maar enkele maanden later was het de best verkopende computer.

Una aplicación denominada como tal ejerce una enorme influencia en el desarrollo de posteriores desarrollos informáticos y en la forma como se ofrece un servicio a partir del momento en que la killer application se populariza.

Killer application eller killer app er betegnelsen for en anvendelse af en teknologi der er så nyttig eller overbevisende at den kan få en stor gruppe mennesker til at anvende teknologien og på den måde udbrede teknologien og skabe et skift i markedet. Begrebet killer app stammer fra computer-verdenen. Det klassiske eksempel på en killer app er VisiCalc, det første regneark. VisiCalc var så nyttigt og gav så mange nye muligheder at tusindvis af mennesker købte Apple II computere udelukkende for at kunne køre programmet. VisiCalc blev dermed den direkte årsag til Apples success og indirekte årsagen til udbredelsen af personlige computere i erhvevslivet.

killer app
The application that actually makes a sustaining market for a promising but under-utilized technology. First used in the mid-1980s to describe Lotus 1-2-3 once it became evident that demand for that product had been the major driver of the early business market for IBM PCs. The term was then restrospectively applied to VisiCalc, which had played a similar role in the success of the Apple II. After 1994 it became commonplace to describe the World Wide Web as the Internet's killer app. One of the standard questions asked about each new personal-computer technology as it emerges has become "what's the killer app?"
