Die Internet Society (ISOC) wurde 1992 auf der INET-Konferenz in Kobe (Japan) gegründet und ist als nichtstaatliche Organisation (engl. non-governmental organisation, kurz: NGO) für die Pflege und Weiterentwicklung der Internetinfrastruktur zuständig. Die ISOC hat ihren Hauptsitz in der Nähe von Washington, D.C. und besteht aus mehr als 6.000 Einzelpersonen sowie ca. 150 Organisationen aus über 170 Ländern. Die Mitglieder (ca. 16.000) sind verpflichtet, zur weltweiten Verbreitung des Internets beizutragen und dessen Fortbestehen zu garantieren. Dazu zählt unter anderem die Veröffentlichung der sogenannten RFCs. Der Vorstand der ISOC (Board of Trustees) besteht aus 15 Mitgliedern, die von allen Mitgliedern weltweit gewählt werden. Die ISOC beherbergt die für die Internetstandards und Resourcenverwaltung zuständigen Gremien: IETF, IESG, IAB, IRTF und IANA (Letztere hat 2003 einen Teil ihrer Aufgaben ICANN übertragen). Durch regelmäßige Veröffentlichungen werden aktuelle Entwicklungen vorgestellt.

Internet Society (w skrócie ISOC) to międzynarodowe stowarzyszenie mające na celu dbanie o harmonijny rozwój Internetu oraz w pewnym sensie reprezentujące użytkowników Internetu przed rządowymi agencjami odpowiedzialnymi za nadzór nad Internetem w poszczególnych krajach. Internet Society zostało założone w 1991 roku przez grupę osób z wieloletnim doświadczeniem w pracy na rzecz IETF. Głównym, pierwotnym celem ISOC-u było wsparcie pracy IETF i pokrewnych nieformalnych grup specjalistów zajmujących się rozwojem Internetu. Ze względu na całkowicie nieformalny charakter IETF, organizacja ta miała poważne problemy przy organizowaniu swoich zjazdów i opłacaniu sekretariatu. Osoby zaangażowane w prace IETF nie chciały regulować statusu prawnego tego ciała, gdyż bały się, że zabije to ideę tej nieformalnej instytucji.

Internet Society (zkratka ISOC) je mezinárodní nevýdelecná organizace založená v roce 1992, která je zamerena na vedení internetových standardu, výuku a metodiku. Jedním z hlavních cílu je „zajištení otevreného vývoje a rozšírení Internetu pro všechny lidi na celém svete“. Internet society má kanceláre nedaleko Washingtonu, D.C. v USA a v Ženeve ve Švýcarsku. Zakládající clenové zahrnují více než 80 organizací s více než 27 000 cleny po celém svete. Organizace zformulovaly více než 80 „zákonu“ pro užití internetu, které se od sebe liší podle specifických internetových standardu používaných v dané zemi.
