• Grand maître est le titre traditionnel généralement attribué au dirigeant d’un ordre ou d’une confrérie.

• • Exemples d'ordres :
    • l’ordre du Temple, dont Jacques de Molay fut le dernier grand maître, comme l'indique la plaque commémorative qui marque l'endroit où il fut exécuté sur l'île de la Cité à Paris. Cette expression de « grand maître » n’est, en fait, apparue que tardivement, fin du , début du , dans des chartes tardives et dans les actes du procès des Templiers. Ce grade ne semble pas avoir été utilisé par les Templiers eux-mêmes . Pour désigner le chef suprême de l’ordre, il convient donc de dire simplement le maître de l’ordre et non grand maître.
    • l’ordre Teutonique (voir : Liste des grands maîtres de l'ordre Teutonique).
    • l’ordre de Malte, qui existe toujours en tant qu'association caritative (voir : Grands maîtres de l'ordre de Malte),
    • l’ordre de la Rose-Croix, qui, du point de vue des historiens, n’a jamais existé en tant qu’entité unifiée, mais plusieurs fraternités différentes ont utilisé cette appellation,
    • etc.
