Application-specific integrated circuit
An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is an integrated circuit (IC) customized for a particular use, rather than intended for general-purpose use. For example, a chip designed solely to run a cell phone is an ASIC. In contrast, the 7400 series and 4000 series integrated circuits are logic building blocks that can be wired together for use in many different applications. Intermediate between ASICs and standard products are application specific standard products (ASSPs).

Anwendungsspezifische Integrierte Schaltung Eine Anwendungsspezifische Integrierte Schaltung (engl. application specific integrated circuit, ASIC), auch Custom-Chip, ist eine elektronische Schaltung, die als integrierter Schaltkreis realisiert wurde. ASICs werden weltweit von vielen Herstellern nach Kundenanforderung gefertigt und normalerweise nur an diese geliefert. Darin unterscheidet sich das ASIC deutlicher von anderen Mikrochips als durch Unterschiede in Fabrikation und Entwurf. Wird ein wie ein ASIC entwickelter Baustein am Markt verkauft, spricht man häufig von einem anwendungsspezifischen Standardprodukt (ASSP).

ASIC (ang. Application Specific Integrated Circuit) to typ elektronicznych układów scalonych zaprojektowanych do realizacji z góry ściśle określonego zadania. Zaletą rozwiązań ASIC jest to, że potrafią zastąpić cały zestaw układów ogólnego przeznaczenia realizujących tę samą funkcję przez co są od nich mniejsze, tańsze, szybsze, zużywają mniej energii, są bardziej niezawodne oraz potrafią zrealizować nowe funkcje zgodnie z pomysłem projektanta. Dodatkowo poprzez zastosowania pojedynczego chipu obniżają się koszta projektowania, produkcji i montażu płytek drukowanych. Układy takie, które w jednej obudowie mieszczą kompletną funkcjonalność urządzenia nazywa się Systemami na Chipie (System On Chip - SOC).

L'ASIC (acronimo per Application Specific Integrated Circuit) è un circuito integrato creato appositamente per risolvere un'applicazione di calcolo ben precisa. La specificità della progettazione, focalizzata sulla risoluzione di un unico problema, consente di raggiungere delle prestazioni difficilmente ottenibili con l'uso di soluzioni più generiche. Lo sviluppo di questo genere di integrati è però molto costoso e per questo motivo il loro impiego è limitato a campi in cui possano essere usati in maniera massiccia, come l'elettronica di consumo (masterizzatori, schede video, schede madri, apparati di rete) mentre per usi su scala più limitata vengono preferite, ad esempio, tecnologie FPGA.
