Apache HTTP Server
The Apache HTTP Server, commonly referred to simply as Apache, is a web server notable for playing a key role in the initial growth of the World Wide Web. Apache was the first viable alternative to the Netscape Communications Corporation web server (currently known as Sun Java System Web Server), and has since evolved to rival other Unix-based web servers in terms of functionality and performance. Since April 1996 Apache has been the most popular HTTP server on the World Wide Web; since March 2006 however it has experienced a steady decline of its market share, lost mostly against Microsoft Internet Information Services and the .NET platform. As of October 2007 Apache served 47.73% of all websites.

Hinzu kommen verschiedene Multiprocessing-Module (MPM), die je nach Plattform unterschiedliche Lösungen für die gleichzeitige Bedienung mehrerer Client-Anfragen anbieten: Beispielsweise setzt das MPM prefork für klassische UNIX-Systeme auf Forking von Prozessen, während mpm_winnt für die unter Windows empfehlenswerteren Threads optimiert ist.

Apache - otwarty serwer HTTP dostępny dla wielu systemów operacyjnych (m.in. UNIX, GNU/Linux, BSD, Microsoft Windows). Apache/PHP jest platformą konkurencyjną do technologii ASP.NET Microsoftu, opartej na komercyjnym serwerze IIS. Wraz z PHP i silnikiem baz danych MySQL na platformie Linux, Apache stanowi tzw. platformę LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP).

Apache is een opensource webserver voor UNIX (BSD, GNU/Linux Mac OS X, Solaris en andere UNIX-systemen), Microsoft Windows, Novell Netware, BeOS, OS/2 en IBM's OS/400. Over de oorsprong van de naam Apache verschillen de meningen. Soms wordt aangenomen dat de oorspronkelijke auteur gewoon een originele naam had verzonnen terwijl anderen claimen dat de naam voorkwam uit "a patchy server". De eerste versie van Apache (welke uitkwam in februari 1995) bestond namelijk uit een aangepaste (gepatchte) versie van de NCSA HTTP-server. Later is alle code van Apache herschreven.

Foi criado em 1995 por Rob McCool, então funcionário do NCSA (National Center for Supercomputing Applications). Numa pesquisa realizada em dezembro de 2007, foi constatado que a utilização do Apache representa 47.20% dos servidores ativos no mundo.

Apache HTTP Server er en webserver fra Apache Software Foundation. Projektet er styret af en gruppe frivillige rundt omkring i verden, som udvikler serveren og skriver dens manualer. A public-domain Web server developed by a loosely-knit group of programmers. The first version of Apache, based on the NCSA httpd Web server, was developed in 1995. Because it was developed from existing NCSA code plus various patches, it was called a patchy server - hence the name Apache Server. As a result of its sophisticated features, excellent performance, and low price (it's free), Apache has became the world's most popular Web server. By some estimates, it is used to host more than 50% of all Web sites in the world. Core development of the Apache Web server is performed by a group of about 20 volunteer programmers, called the Apache Group. However, because the source code is freely available, anyone can adapt the server for specific needs, and there is a large public library of Apache add-ons. In many respects, development of Apache is similar to development of the Linux operating system.
